Sorry if this was already posted elsewhere, I runned a quick search and didnt seem like it was:
For anyone who wants the closest thing to a Twin Peaks game a major game studio ever released (and confirmed to be directly inspired), I'd recommend the first four Silent Hill games. Even for non-gamers, I'd recommend them purely as an art experience.
I actually totally understand that feeling, but I do have to say, you picked the worst one to start on! The gameplay mechanics of 4 are probably the most (intentionally) suffocating and dread-inducing of the four. As someone who can feel anxious playing any video game, 4 triggers every possible bad feeling I can have during a game. I love it for that reason, but it's also the one I've played the least. The first 3 on easy mode are kinda like cakewalks though, if you want to just focus on atmosphere. They're great creepy room simulators if you dial down the difficulty.I tried playing Silent Hill 4 and it was too scary.
I can't do horror video games. I am a huge horror movie fan. Have a huge dvd shelf of them, have seen countless films, and have hundreds more on my list...but horror video games absolutely terrify me. To the degree that it's actually not fun for me, it's just a terrible experience. I also gave up on Last of Us after about 2 hours.
You know, actually, of any media it's probably video games that have that effect on me too. Here's the thing about video games like that: they invade my dreams.
When I was obsessed with Arkham Asylum and then Arkham City, I was having constant dreams that I was in those games. And Asylum is pretty scary actually (though you're Batman so it's not TOO scary, you got this shit.)
Edit: a quirky Cooper-esque investigatorI’ve played Silent Hill 2 and enjoyed it.
Anyone here ever played Deadly Premonition? It borrows heavily from Peaks and Lynch. The main character is sort of a quirky Cooper sequel investigator in a small town setting. Plus they even have a Blue Velvet style nightclub!
The first Silent Hill game for me is comparable to the Twin Peaks pilot. I feel the pilot totally changed what is capable with network television. That art can be made. Silent Hill did the same thing with video games for me. (I know I may have been a little late to the party in that regard). For anyone who wants the closest thing to a Twin Peaks game a major game studio ever released (and confirmed to be directly inspired), I'd recommend the first four Silent Hill games. Hell, the first Silent Hill game invaded my waking life. Some point in the game I had to find a hammer. The next day at work, someone mentioned a hammer. I immediately thought "I need that right now!" It took a second to realize I wasn't in the game. Here's the thing about video games like that: they invade my dreams.
Looks pretty neat. Does anyone remember this one?Sorry if this was already posted elsewhere, I runned a quick search and didnt seem like it was:
I purchased it on Switch — never crashed once. It obviously has differences from TP, but wow, it’s the closest we may ever get to a fully fledged open world TP video game (imo).I was playing Deadly Premonition a few years back on Steam, but it was seriously buggy. It would crash randomly all the time, and I just gave up in the end. Amazing game though.
Have you checked in on this recently? Google says a translation was released in 2021. I recall reading about this back when it was in limbo, and the details of how the translation went ahead is pretty interesting.Still holding out hope for an English translation…
