I turned my radio on and they (Radio K) were playing Pinky's Dream. I was kind of turning to the radio to escape my sadness about it for a little bit, ha. I'm touched by the outpouring of love. For an hour I had been flicking through my tumblr feed and finding out that nearly all of my mutuals happen to have also loved the man.

The Daily Telegraph has a nice piece by its chief film writer, Robbie Collin.

David Lynch’s films made no sense – that’s why I loved him

The famously gnomic director’s refusal to dilute his cinema with logic is what made it so unique and extraordinary

Another Telegraph writer, Tim Robey, writes about each of his films. He picks Mulholland Dr as his favourite.

What's most interesting is the below-the-line comments on the many different newspaper websites and actual websites. Comments sections can often be mean and there are inevitably some crass remarks by people who probably know nothing about him, but 95 per cent of the many comments are sad and affectionate across sites of all political and artistic persuasions. David Lynch wasn't a mainstream director, yet mainstream audiences were aware of him and loved him. I can't think of many avant-garde directors getting that sort of outpouring of affection, which is a testament to the magic he weaved. Everyone has some moment or image that they remember after seeing one of his works.

David Lynch was that rare thing: a director whose work crossed over to the mainstream due to its quality without selling out his artistic ideals. When he was forced to compromise, as with Dune or mid-period Twin Peaks season two, his work failed to connect. But Dune remains a well-thought-of cult film, even after the Denis Villeneuve films (I prefer it) and Twin Peaks is a fantastic 'gateway drug' to 'full-heroin' David Lynch.

Just a quick thank you to everyone who contributes to this great thread. It helps me a lot to find all the different statements and comments quicker this way.

The French loved David Lynch. I imagine they're already planning a very special tribute to his work.
