SPECULATION Season 4 or something else – What is Wisteria/Unrecorded Night?

That sounds pretty conclusive. Due to agoraphobia (and maybe a few other phobias) Lars Von Trier directed at least one feature and an entire season of "The Kingdom" remotely, but I am not sure how well that would work for such a tactile artists at DKL, or if a studio would invest in it. If Lynch is up for doing something, maybe a "Inland Empire" sized production could still be possible.

I know I should be more devastated by this than I am but I still don't really feel like it's a death sentence as far as new Lynch film work. It seemed pretty clear a while ago that a new film/TV work on the scale of The Return, with shooting on location and soundstages, might not really be in the cards post-COVID. I mean, there's a reason Unrecorded Night was likely canceled in the first place.

What I was taking solace in is quotes like the ones from Kyle and Laura on the IE Criterion special feature about Lynch wanting to return to his roots making smaller films more akin to Eraserhead or Inland Empire, which he could do at home at his compound on smaller cameras/with an more intimate crew. There's also projects like Snootworld, which would be directed completely "remotely" since it's animated. And the glimmer of hope re: Antelope makes it sound like the idea of making a narrative live action film isn't completely dead to him.

I am bummed to hear of his health issues and that he's no longer able to be out and about but I'm not ready to throw a funeral for his filmmaking career just yet. I think maybe that's what the kids called 'copium'?

Thanks for the early sneak peak at the interview, @fatecolossal. Much appreciated.

I think this article answers all the questions about Unrecorded Night and why it fell through. Honestly in a way it makes me even happier we got The Return when we did and that it turned out so beautiful (for me, anyway). His health comes first and I'm glad he's taking care of himself. Everything else is secondary. The man has given us so much throughout his life (not just movies, but his art, music, weather reports, etc.) that it would be greedy to ask for more. I hope he stays creative within his health limitations and does things that make him happy. Long live, David Lynch!

Everything makes a lot more sense now, in terms of his focus and choice of projects to be active on. I'd known for a while that he was being treated for emphysema, that wasn't a secret but last I'd heard he was doing much better - maybe that was more hope than anything. Because logically speaking, once you've progressed to that, it's kind of hard to recover, especially at that age.

This will sound ridiculous, but I've had three dreams over the last couple of years where I was Lynch's assistant. They were cool dreams. I know we shouldn't idolize anyone really but I've always felt some odd connection with him and his work. Hearing he has watched Forensic Files repeatedly only deepens that somehow LOL.

Best wishes to David on continued recovery and I hope we get to experience another film work from him, regardless of how he does it.

Didn’t Sabrina say Unrecorded Night was cancelled by Netflix and not by Lynch?
Yeah, but cuse of the pandemic restrictions. But then, maybe could have re/started, but Lynch couldn't cause his health issues.. etc
Tho she, or anyone else, never really explained exactly how things went, and if at one point the thing remained on pause/dead, cause lack of interest, tho she said it may be come back on production with them or elsewhere.
Its a shitty sum of circumstances for sure, If not for covid, we could have been talking about the meanings of UNRECORDED NIGHT for some time now.

Rushed over here as an article pertaining to his health made it to the Dutch news.

💔

Really weirded out by the reporting on this like it’s breaking news when I believe it was public knowledge months ago that he was diagnosed with emphysema. I mean, we talked about it here at great length. Guess it’s not news until it’s in Sight & Sound?

"Ladies and Gentlemen,
Yes, I have emphysema from my many years of
smoking. I have to say that I enjoyed smoking
very much, and I do love tobacco - the smell of
it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them - but
there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and
the price for me is emphysema. I have now quit
smoking for over two years. Recently I had many
tests and the good news is that I am in excellent
shape except for emphysema. I am filled with
happiness, and I will never retire.
I want you all to know that I really appreciate
your concern.
Love,
David"

Small walks being exhausting is definitely news to me, and I think most of us, since speculation on projects had not really decreased.

Very happy to hear he is in good spirits.

Yes, and it is worth noting that Netflix got a new (not exactly artist friendly) head of scripted content at that time. But, often expensive productions that are very dependent on their stars(or their star director) take out insurance policies, in case the production cannot be completed with that person. And if there are major health scares, such insurances can become so expensive to acquire, that it means a production cannot go forward. Those are just two of a multitude of scenarios for why "Unrecorded Night" remains unrecorded.

This is in part why you'll see actors who've struggled in one way or another drop off the map. Mel Gibson underwrote Robert Downey Jr's policy so he could get cast in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

I love this man so much! May he always be healthy and happy.

As for what's next for David, fwiw, there's this from a Chrystabell interview in the same Sight & Sound issue -

Q: Are there other projects you're working on together?
A: So David and I... you never know because all the elements have to be spinning in a certain way to catch the light a certain way, to then begin to think about the next project. It's a very mysterious process, but we're starting to whisper about the next musical endeavor. We've got some ideas taking shape, but whether that will happen... because if the wind changes, you know? But there are whispers.

Chrystabell has a really strong voice and the album seems to lean into her pipes in new, sustained and emphatic ways. Sublime Eternal Love is built on single bellows sustained and layered. In light of Lynch's ailment it takes on a new significance. Maybe in this era of his output, she'll continue to work as his voice.

He would easily be able to direct anything and possibly will in the future as discussions have been made. Do not count him out of anything - he is not retired or anything close to it. He has just been enjoying working on his art and music lately. If wanted to start directing a project today, he could no problem. I am disappointed this magazine decided to highlight this part of David’s private private life rather than the amazing innovative album he and Chrystabell released recently which is why they were able to talk with him in the first place.

The above quotes are from Sabrina. Does this mean Unrecorded Night is moving forward? Could be something else , could even be a season 4 with Frost maybe helping with the direction. Unrecorded Night seems to be the most plausible one as Sabrina mentions in the AMA thread that the screenplay has been written
