This is a minor thing, but in the pilot Dr. Jacoby wears a traditional doctors coat — so either the hospital permitted him to see and treat patients in their facility, or he just threw one on to possibly sneak into the morgue and say goodbye to Laura.

I suppose it’s possible that Calhoun Memorial allows him to practice psychiatry within their walls, but that feels like a stretch, considering what a bad shrink he is. And it’s just more interesting to think that even with his doctorate in psychiatry, he still has to sneak into a medical facility as he is just that disreputable amongst other medical professionals.

That's a funny point. I always find it odd, surreal and unnerving how chipper Jacobi is in the pilot. Like maybe not happy that Laura died, but certainly all buzzed up and excited by what's going on. It's extremely strange. Almost like he finds it funny.

Yeah, Jacoby’s behavior is very strange in the pilot.

Revisiting the pilot after having seen Jacoby’s phone call with Laura in Missing Pieces, I can sort of read his chipper demeanor as a kind of nervousness — a high school girl and patient of his who he was making passes at just got killed, and now he’s snooping around at the hospital to see if this is going to come back on him in any way.

I got in a fight on the reddit once because it just seemed obvious to me Laura and Jacobi were sleeping together. A lot of people said absolutely not, and there's no evidence for that, but it just seemed more like "well why wouldn't they be" to me, and the whole secret tapes thing, all these weird intimate creepy ways Jacobi would talk about Laura. Laura was essentially a sex addict, so all the signs seem to be there. But this really upset people!

I think it's because the regular TV series 'softened' many of the characters and people became attached to those nicer versions. Characters such as Audrey, Coop and Jacoby had much 'sharper edges' originally. The Twin Peaks of the pilot, FWWM and The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer is more like the 'Odessaverse' than the rest of seasons 1 and 2. Jacoby seems seriously nervous to me. I don't think he was on coke, because Coop would have noticed, but he's definitely hiding something.

I have to say, it never occurred to me that a psychiatrist wouldn't work a hospital. If Jacoby had originally qualified as a medical doctor, it's possible he works regular shifts as a normal doctor as well specialising in psychiatry. It also brings in the question again of whether Twin Peaks is the name of a county as well as a town. A town hospital would likely be small, roping in qualified doctors from nearby and perhaps allowing the likes of Jacoby to run a practice in an annex. My city has 235,000 inhabitants spread over a large area, but only one hospital on the outskirts of the north of the city. So is Calhoun a county-size hospital, which would be big, or a town-sized one? I find myself leaning towards the idea that Twin Peaks is a small county of 50,000-odd inhabitants with a town of about 5,000 inhabitants also called 'Twin Peaks'.

Well I personally don’t think that Laura slept with Jacoby (at least I hope she didn’t), but I wouldn’t be too shocked or surprised if they did. It’s not so crazy to imagine a scenario where Laura went along his advances in order to get a specific prescription filled, and then regretted it immediately after.

I’ve always thought that it was likely that Laura and Josie had some sort of thing, if for no other reason than the fact that I can’t picture those two having *just* English lessons behind closed doors.

I’m not surprised they have psychiatrists on staff, just surprised that they might let Jacoby be on staff. But rural areas very often have difficulty attracting medical professionals, and maybe Jacoby was the best they could get.

Yes, Laura's diary certainly pushes in that direction.

I always leaned in the direction of they slept together at least once. But the way Laura reacts to him in the Missing Pieces seems different from her currently courted paramours, on some spectrum of being repulsed. Although, I'm not sure how much the spiraling situation of the film is affecting the context of her dealing with him when he calls out of nowhere.

I was never sure about Jacoby. It seems more like she uses Jacoby as someone to whom she can show off. She can make all these tapes telling filthy confessional stories he can get off to, like using a phone sex line, while stringing him along with promises of sex. So I'm not sure she actually had sex with him. I think he was kind of a plaything for which she had contempt.
